The Benefits Of A Montessori Floor Bed

Publication date: 10/11/21

Summary in 30 seconds

A Montessori floor bed promotes freedom of movement, independence and autonomy because the mattress is low to the floor

Children are encouraged to explore their surroundings - and the world - when they're not restricted by a crib

A family may worry that a child will get off the mattress and avoid sleeping, but young children don't fight their biological need for sleep the way adults do.

A consistent routine, as well as using a floor bed from an early age can also help prevent a child from playing instead of sleeping.

The key principles of the Montessori method are: respect for the child, absorbing mind, self-education, prepared environment, and sensitive times, and a floor bed supports these principles

It is crucial that the room is sufficiently childproof once the transition to a floor bed is made

Montessori floor beds are safe when used correctly

Every year 10,000 babies are injured and there are 100 infant deaths due to cribs and playpens. And by the time they're toddlers, they'll be so used to using a Montessori-style floor bed and the independence that goes with it, that they'll stay in bed at night as well as kids at that age. That's not to say they'll never get up at night or that sleeping will always be easy, but a Montessori floor bed doesn't add any extra challenges that typical beds don't have. Q: What age is suitable for a Montessori bed?

Floor Bed With Toddler And Infant In The Same Room?

Currently my 8 month old sleeps on a floor bed (modified Ikea Kura bed) and it works wonders for us. The "plan" was to eventually have a second and by then my son would be old enough to flip the bed over to its loft configuration and put the new baby on the bottom once we stopped sharing the room. The room isn't big enough for two twin floor beds, so I think we'll have to put the Kura away for a few years and put two crib-sized floor beds in the room instead. We wouldn't move the new baby to the floor bed until around 6 months, which we did with my son.
