Field Hockey Rules

What Are The Rules Of Field Hockey?
A backstick foul occurs when a player hits the ball with the back of their stick, while a hockey stick interference is awarded when a player uses their stick to strike an opponent's stick. Field hockey players need to be very aware of what they are doing during the game because fouls can injure themselves, their teammates or their opponents. Fouls also play an important role in the majority of field hockey rules, as fouls focus on the correct use of a player's skills in order to protect themselves and others. Rules for Players There are many rules for field hockey players that must be followed during an official game. Players must wear their shin guards, mouth guards and approved eyewear at all times while on the field. Players must avoid using any part of their body to move the ball during a game or it will result in a foul. Any field hockey goal scored by a player must be scored from a field goal, penalty corner or penalty stroke. The most important rule of field hockey is that it is a non-contact sport and players cannot have any physical contact with their opponents otherwise they risk being kicked out of the game. Players must listen these rules in order to participate in a fair and clean game without these rules, field hockey players run the risk of injury to themselves and others during a game. Foul awards are common in field hockey and play an important role in helping teams successfully win a game, due to penalties from their opponents.Field Hockey, The Rules
A field hockey game consists of two halves, usually 35 minutes each, and begins with a back pass (an undefended pass from one teammate to another in midfield). Goals are scored when the ball - made of sturdy plastic, weighing between 5 1/2 ounces and 5 3/4 ounces with a circumference of 8 13/16 inches to 9 1/4 inches - crosses the goal line between the goal posts after being hit by an attacking stick inside the circle. Other offenses include stepping forward (with the exception of the goalkeeper, no player may play the ball with any part of the body), dangerous use of the stick and hitting the ball in a way that could lead to a dangerous game. In high school federation play, if the score is tied after regulation time expires, an overtime period of two 10-minute halves is played, with each team reducing the number of players to 7 per team. As High School Field Hockey Adopts New Rules, Teams Counter With New Strategies
The Arundel field hockey coach had just watched her team's 3-2 lead turn into a 4-3 deficit in Saturday's game against a school in Kentucky, and with less than 10 minutes to go. do in the fourth quarter, Vosburg wanted to give his players a mental break and a chance to regroup. But as part of a rule change in 2020 by the National Federation of State High School Associations, field hockey games are now played in four 15-minute periods – as they are internationally and in college – rather than two 30-minute halves. "I think, unfortunately, without that sometimes they lack that confidence."Advertising
Although the rule removes some ability to strategize mid-period, it does provide players with a little more planned rest. "Quarters definitely helped fight that because mentally I know there's a break."
Coming out of last season, during which Beaudoin suffered several stress-related leg injuries, the break between quarterbacks gives him chances to recover and play more minutes. On the other hand, as the daughter of a coach, Beaudoin sees the impact of the rule change on her mother's ability to involve other players. "I notice a girl is tired, she needs to substitute, and I'm watching, and normally there would be 15 minutes left," Garden said. “With shootouts, the goaltender and the [offensive] player are trying to figure out what to do at the same time,” Broad Run senior goaltender Brigitte Racey said. "While for shot[s], it's a huge guessing game for the goalkeeper, and the [offensive] player has the advantage."
In one-on-one situations, Racey's strategy is to focus less on the attacker and more on the ball as she looks for opportunities to attack and knock it down. Advertising
"We basically tell them... 'You dance with the outfielder,'" Dudek said. "If you could do that for 10 seconds, you're pretty good."
