So the biggest question I've been getting since we announced we were looking for a new color for our floors is why are we painting them again! The new paint color of our floors is a little whiter and brighter than the old color. There was nothing wrong with our painted floors, I just wanted to try a new color! For now, we have decided to repaint the floors of the main floor only & we will decide if we want to repaint the second floor later! Our floor also has all the floors painted, but the original paint color is still the same. What I like the most about our painted floors is that we can change them at any time. We're pretty laid back with our old floors, we were lugging furniture around, everyone wore their shoes in our house, and I really wanted them to have the used look. I found them to be easy to clean by sweeping, mopping, vacuuming, and spot cleaning with water and diluted vinegar when needed, which wasn't much. You can also choose to seal the cracks if you wish, but we haven't felt this was necessary for our floors. If you put too much paint on the floors it could get into the cracks, but we had no problems with that! When we first got our floors, we started with raw unfinished floors, so no, we didn't sand them. This time we just painted over the paint that was already on our floors. We cleaned them very well but did not sand the paint off the floors. They've driven the nails into the boards so they don't stick out, which is great for many reasons, but it also adds a lot of charm to the floors. I would sand and prime before painting engineered hardwood, that would be more prep work than our floors. Daily use (walking, pets, children's toys) hasn't scratched our floors. I'm really excited about this new paint color, I like that it's a bit whiter and brighter.

When Mr. Yolo renovated this house 4 years ago, after removing all layers of flooring (7 including underlayments), he sanded the floor and unfortunately the area near the sink had lots of water stains. Instead of sanding the floor again, we decided to lighten the room by choosing painted parquet. From this point we used a square to get 45 degree lines intersecting the center (think a big X in the middle of the room). We then spaced subsequent rows 24 inches apart in each direction. We placed a strip of painter's tape 1.5" thick on either side of the line to make a 3" strip. As I mentioned above, we sanded the sample squares we painted on the floor to choose the colors: Oyster Shell for the stripes and Windsor Gray for the diamonds. Even though this house is cleaned regularly, we were surprised at the amount of "rawness" on the floor (paint splatters, cooking grease, etc.) 2) First coat

Now that the floor is prepped, the painting can begin (which I usually call stage 1, but I fought my urge and prepped the floor first). Then use a ⅜” nap roller for the open floor, always keeping an eye out for stray hairs that are magnetically charged to stick to the paint. From this point we used a square to get 45 degree lines intersecting the center (think a big X in the middle of the room). We then spaced subsequent rows 24 inches apart in each direction. We placed a strip of painter's tape 1.5" thick on either side of the line to make a 3" strip. Once the tape was in place, we used the painter's hack to get clean lines: used Oyster Shell paint (aka the base color) to coat the edge of the painter's tape and let it dry. After removing the lines, Mr. Yolo washed the floor and also applied touch-up paint to the low-gloss areas. Much like Oyster Shell's first round, we used a brush around the perimeter, then used a ¼” nap roller for the open floor. Do not use pencil for layout. We spoke with the Rust-Oleum team, and they suggested painting the floor with the first color, painting over the topcoat, THEN marking the pattern, painting the second color, and finishing with a second. topcoat layer.
